5 Simple Steps for Easing Into the Back to School Transition

5 Simple Steps for Easing Into the Back to School Transition

Start Early: Begin initial preparations prior to the start of the school year.

Start preparations early, around the start of June. This will give your student plenty of time to get ready for the upcoming year and mentally prepare for it. It will also reduce last-minute stress so that the transition is smoother and gives your student a better chance at success. Take advantage of free online resources, like Khan Academy or Math Nation, to review any areas where your student may need extra support.

Establish a Bedtime Schedule: Create a regular bedtime and morning routine for school days.

Establishing a bedtime routine will prepare your child for the upcoming school year. Start by creating a plan and setting expectations to help your family ease back into their pre-summer sleep schedule. Set a specific bedtime and wake up time, and be consistent with it even during the weekends. In addition to having ample sleep, encourage your child to create regular self-care routines before they go to bed like setting goals for the next day, doing breathing exercises, or taking a warm bath or shower.

Set Realistic Expectations: Talk with your student about practical expectations for their studies, social life, and hobbies during the school year.

Make a Plan: Work on in-class and take-home activities ahead of time to create good study habits early in the semester.

Being organized and on top of their work can make a big difference in your student's academic success. Create a clear schedule and discuss any changes, such as after school activities or extracurriculars, with them to make sure they're ready on time. Make sure to also set aside designated times for studying and completing projects. Getting into the habit of being proactive will better prepare your student for expectations during school and beyond!

Plan Ahead: Organize daily tasks such as getting ready for school, completing homework assignments, and getting to bed each night before the day begins.

Planning is the key to starting off the school year right. Take some time in advance to map out a daily routine that works for your student, whether it be making their lunch in the morning or setting aside designated time periods for completing tasks and assignments. Discuss this with them and make sure they understand what is expected of them so that they can stay organized and on top of their work throughout the school year!
